Anyone have any self help suggestions for strengthening knees? I have doscovered recently that mine arent as up to the job as they once were. If I crouch down, I dont seem to be able to get back up again without leaning on something; my knees and thights wont push my body weight back to upright - and Im not overweight by more than about three quarters of a stone (and going down).

You need to strengthen your quad muscles. If your thigh muscles are strong this will take the strain away from your knees. There are lots of simple quad muscle exercises you can do without any equipment. The simplest one is probably to sit on the bed with your leg straight out in front of you and your toes not pointed (pointing straight up instead) and raise your leg up several times till you feel it in your quad. Then switch legs.

Have a quick google of simple quad muscle strengthening exercises and try a few of the ones they suggest. See which ones suit you. You should feel that the muscles on the front of your thighs are working hard (feel tired or burning) but feel no stress or pain on your knees.

I find kick starting motorcycles helps. But seriously folks, keep those knees moving, exercise usually helps.

I knew there was reason I was looking at that Ariel outfit  I'm thinking age might be a factor in the k-nakkered-ness of my k-nees :(

I get really bad knees sometimes too and I agree with what has been said by others- the trick is to keep exercising them!
