Ground Source heating systems - working for you?

Hi all,
We are having a fairly extensive kitchen renovation done and as part of the project I have been working towards installing ground source heating (working of a shallow pipe rather than a bore hole). I have had the renewables man from the energy saving trust round (who should be impartial...) and he recommended it without hesitation for our situation (currently on oil, plenty of land available). I've had several quotes for systems which all seem to be coming in at a similar kind of price - .... however, I have had a very mixed bag of how positive the companies have been about whether it will work well in our environment.
So I was hoping that there might be a few people on here that might share their experience of such systems? Are they working for you? How does your electricity spend compare with what was projected by the installer? Maintenance/Reliability?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help,
Richard
