Solar powered security lights

I've been searching for some time now for a decent solar powered security light with PIR. Normally these beast are halogen powered, and with it energy hungry, but this isn't the way to go. I'm just looking for something to illuminate a path and porch area - so a massive 200W+ halogen is unneccessary.

Originally I was thinking about a simple PIR with seperate illuminating thing - but none of the PIR's would support energy saving bulbs - leaving me at a loss. Besides which, I'm also crappy when it comes to home fabrication - particularly electrics - so I'm really looking for an off the shelf solution, which will (ideally) have an internal battery, but a movable solar panel (as the place I want to mount the light is on the north side of the building, under an eve, and isn't a particularly sunny spot!).

These appear to be quite rare, so any help would be appreciated!

Hi Batfink
I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Did you ever get yours and did it work?

Nope - finger was never pulled out, time has past, and other projects have become more pressing!

Hello ..

I got this one for Xmas: SF03 Solar 'Enforcer' Security Floodlight With PIR Detector from that website you posted.

Great thing! I've got it in the chicken pen .. so that when I got and feed/open/close in the winter .. I have light .. and it was too far away to have "wired" electricity.

It works great .. would recommend it ..

For anyone wanting just a low level illumiation on a path or at steps, I bought the B&Q solar up lighters.

Now they are bloody expensive (£50) for a pair of up lighters, but they're pretty good. You get a solar panel,2 AA rechargeable batteries, photoelectric sensor and two "spot lights" with 5 LED's in each on 10 foot of wire.

They are perfect for our winding path which I used to nearly kill my self on during the dark of the winter.

have a look on Ebay for solar security lights. I bought one from an english seller and it works very good. Mine is not a security light but a regular light to light up my "cargo bay". It contains 1 light with 5 bright LED's, 3 meters of cable and a mountable panel of 15 x 10 cm. I paid about 30 EUR. If looking for a real security light (with sensor), they're also available on Ebay in different shapes and sizes. Just type 'solar light" or 'solar energy' and give it a try. good luck.
