I thought you may be interested to see some evidence of the work that has gone in to preparing a vegetable plot for the current season. We first spotted this old farmhouse in September last year when it came up for rent. The garden was completely neglected, overrun with docks and nettles and was being used to dump all the old electrical wiring that had come out of the house. I identified a plot for vegetables that i paced out as being 225 square metres (15 by 15) which is about 2250 square feet. Being rural we have rabbits and all sorts of other nasties so it was going to need fencing as well.

The first photo was taken on 14th September. We moved in on 17th November although I had been into the garden in October with a 5 litre can of industrial strength "Roundup" and a back pack sprayer.

The second photo was take on 22nd February when I had dug all 4 plots (7 x 7) once with a spade and was part way through tilling the 3rd with a fork to get out the weed roots. The big pile in the far left hand corner is about 10% of the roots that I have dug out. It has all been finished now and 2 large JCB buckets of horse manure dug in.

It's been back breaking work but should be very rewarding!
