The £60 egg

My neighbours boys found something that their whippet was chasing a few months ago. It went to another neighbour then to me. It was a chicken of about 6 weeks old so I built a coup, bought another chicken for company, bought food and equipment etc so the outlay is now about £60 in total.

This second chicken was a goldline and POL...... 3 months on and no eggs whilst the "free" hen gave me this one two days ago.

Thus the £60 egg.

Since then another egg yesterday and hopefully one more today. So now the egg is only worth £20 but it's been fun.

you'd think for the rescue, room & board and company provided she could have wiped it for you first! chickens today have no manners...

Since my last post we have now had a total of 55 eggs from both of the girls. What with the food we have in stock now the coswt to date is now £1.24 per egg  If we get another 50 eggs in march then that cost per egg will drop to 65 pence per egg but it just shows that the set up costs can be alarming. I knocked together a small 2 bird coup but the new one will be a lot larger and for material costs it will be about £70 then there will be the rest of the birds at £10 each x14 =£140 if I go pol or £16 if I go day old.

Still the eggs are really lovely and the neighbour [ who started this all off] seem happy with the taste of his first egg..
