What is a sticky?

This isn't really a 'how do I?' - more of a 'what is?'
Can someone please explain what a sticky is?

It's a thread that doesn't disappear if no-one's posting on it. If you go to the board index and look in any of the sections the sticky threads will stay at the top. All the others slowly work their way down the list unless someone posts something on it.
Bit long-winded but does that explain it?

Ah, right. I think I understand now.
The messages with the icon that looks like someone's stepped in dog pooh and said something unmentionable are stickies. Yes?
