Our plans...

Morning all,

Just wanted to share with you our plans in creating an "ish" garden. :)

At the back of our bungalow we have a sizeable garden - I don't know the exact measurements, however it currently houses a large shed (10 x 8) plus a small shed (6 x 4) plus a large patio area and a useable garden area at least twice the size of the patio, if not larger.

We're aiming to use as much of the available space as possible for cultivating our own crops to be turned into delicious and cost effective meals in the kitchen. Unfortunately, before this can be done we (I) will need to tackle the jungle out there which is in real danger of taking over and starting to sing Feed Me Seymour!

My current thinking is to put in 6 small raised bed area's (probably 1m square) to allow us to segment what we're growing and easily be able to manage rotation, without compromising too much on space and our ability to get around the garden - and with enough space to expand in future if we decide to. I know that Jo finds the prospect of getting it all sorted quite daunting, so I'm hoping to be able to tackle it towards the end of March when she's off on holiday to visit family - kind of an early birthday present for when she gets home.

The largest of the sheds has been taken over as my "brewpub" (part bar, part all grain brewery  ) so the smallest has been allocated for garden tool storage etc. It is in a pretty bad way, and Jo had decided that she'd like to replace it, however I think that I can get another few years out of it yet with a bit of TLC - so the plan is to try and renovate the shed a bit and then spend the money saved on a coldframe/mini greenhouse type thing as well as the wood for raised beds and compost heap etc.

It's all a bit academic at the moment, as I want to try and keep my idea a secret so can only really make plans for the time being ready to set into motion when Jo's now about/

Will share some photo's of the jungle and some rough plans when I get 5 mins.

What do you think?

Certainly anything you can add in the way of glass is going to help you get off to an early start. If you're not frozen, now is as good a time as any to get the ground cleared and dug and maybe to consider getting a soil tester to see what kind of pH you've got to deal with. Any woody plants you're clearing can be burnt in situ - the heat helps kill weed seeds near the surface and the ash is highly beneficial.

Sounds like a lovely surprise for Jo! I hope she's going away for a while - sounds like you've got a big job on your hands. But a job worth doing - you'll be planning your next 6 raised beds before long

Your plans sound good.just a couple of ideas, bin if inappropriate:

I'not sure why you'd have 6 beds as opposed to 3 (usual non-spud growing, rotation, grow spuds in bins). In theory(and I don't know your plot) if you can do 3 x (2x1) beds you'll save a lot of wasted path space.(and a fair bit of construction hassle).
Best Wishes anyhow
