Our rooster has taken a shine to the kids!! Actually ill correct that, my daughter he doesn't seem interested in Finn!!
This is causing huge problems, we're going to hav to rehome him I think which is a shame I've got quite attached to him, he's called Grant. The problem is that Valentina is only just 2 and when Grant trys to jump her he knocks her flying. He is definatly horny and not wicked!!
Does anyone hav any suggestions? I hav asked around to rehome him but roosters aren't a very sought after commodity! I'm reluctant to neck him but will hav to if this continues. Poor Valentina is not impressed and I'm very aware that Madison isn't too far away from her first wobbly steps. Xx

Problem solved, I necked him following another incident with Vale this morning.x

He's in the pot already, bless him. I thought I would find it hard to neck him but I saw him get Vale again today and he really hurt her so while hubby sorted Vale I sorted Grant!! X

I necked 4 roosters on Saturday gone, 3 in the freezer and the big lad was the sunday dinner.. very nice too (they are only 6 months old) with the welsummers, I find them to be a cross of chicken and pheasant :D

Deffo makes a real change to have chicken that tastes different to shop bought organic's. Still it was a odd experience eating something that I reared and killed in the end (hardest part was the eating bit)

I do all of our birds here - roosters, ducks & turkeys - but the 6yr old granddaughter helps me too.

She's always SO proud when we sit to a roast chook dinner & she's helped kill the bird & process it, she's pulled the carrots, picked the peas & podded them, and more importantly, she makes the bestest yorkshire puds ever!

I think this would be my problem as I've discovered the killing bit is not so hard after all (or at least it wasn't when it involved putting something down for medical reasons). But I nearly couldn't eat a fish that my OH had caught from our pond so I feel a bit pathetic.

It is so refreshing to see people not scared of killing their food... Having lived in town for so long, I am always amazed of the reactions of townies at killing an animal to eat it. I can understand being a bit upset about killing an animal you have enjoyed living with, but at the same time, the reason for rearing these animals is for food, so be it. And what a rewarding dinner

It's not just 'townies' loads of the people round here wouldn't kill and eat an animal,I s'pose its symptomatic of the disconnect people have with the earth.There seems to be something wrong with asking someone to do something for you that you're not prepared to do yourself.

Well, we've been here for 2 years now & the first time I ever killed anything was last year when our 3 ednas (xmas turkeys) were still wandering the garden watching hubby rake leaves 2 days before xmas day!

I was born & raised in & around London, then Kent, then Blackpool & was an out & out complete & utter townie, so you can imagine my amusement when I learnt that our 'neighbours' on the working livestock farm next door consisted of 15 children - 2 girls, 13 boys, all aged between 37 & 16 now & NONE of them will kill poultry!

Until last year when the Mum died, they would get in 40 or so turkeys each year for xmas pressies to the friends & neighbours, but 3 days beforehand, would pack them into the trailer & take them overnight 45 miles away to the abbatoir..... well strange!

A few months ago, they had a very poorly hen & one of the lads popped along to ask would I see her off, as it was the kindest thing to do - Leah & I dutifully went along & sorted it - who says townies are squeamish
