				Hi folks,
Any one got any ideas on how to remove the valve on a gas bottle to make it into a wood burner ?
I appreciate the danger of it etc. there is no gas in the bottle and i know it's a right hand thread, sometimes with mastic in it but a load of people make these burners so I want to have a go at doing one.
TIA
Big Al

Here you go honey. I've looked at it a couple of times - we've got a medium size bottle I fancy having a go at. I'll wait and see how you get on

				leverage, lots of leverage.

when I had to make one with very little tools I found a spanner that was the right size and inserted a bit of pipe, the bottle was held in place with a length of metal rammed in the base and the van parked on top of it.
I then made the burner with NO welder. only a battered old drill and lots of nuts and blots. it was not pretty, but it worked.

Not made one from a gas cylinder, but I have from a lorry air tank I found-
In truth it needs the legs re-welding on at a more obtuse angle, and the door sealing properly, but it puts out a nice bit of heat.
If you are concerned about the gas permeating the metal (and who wouldn't be?) then you can fill it with water once you've got the valve off, leave it sat for a couple of days and the drain and cut.

at a guess it looks like a bigger burner or a compost tumbler...

Cheers Sue. Al is right, it's a bigger burner. You can never have enough things to burn stuff in.

Hi Giggles, thanks.
I did three years as a welder/fabricator working on machines for the chemical and pharm industry. All TIG welding. I have both TIG and MIG plants. I built the greenhouse with the MIG.
It was cheaper (just!) buy the materials and build the greenhouse than buy one of the cheaper things, and we get a LOT of wind down the back of the house. This one isn't going anywhere.
Anyway, sorry for hijacking Al's topic! Any questions, feel free to PM me.

				Hi Al
Some really usefull tips on this site
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/show ... hp?t=16867
I've been collecting various bits and pieces over the last couple of months for a similar project. To remove your gas valve first give it a couple of firm taps on the top of the valve then sit astride the bottle and using a good piece of solid bar for a punch, whack it with a big hammer.
