Bay boletus - how to tell whether they are mouldy

I've seen bay boletus in many different countries and they frequently seem to go mouldy - the lovely yellow honeycomb becomes a dull grey or brown - and they are frequently riddled with maggots. I have noticed that the ones which are mouldy/maggoty, tend to have damp caps. So now, when picking, I feel the top of the cap to see if it is cool and damp - in which case I leave it to drop a few million more spores. If not, it becomes lunch. Has anyone else noticed this?
