Just thought i'd say that i've just harvested about 200g of poppy seeds from the wild poppies that are sitting outside my back door.

Not the most adventurous of forage i know, but will go nice in some fresh bread.

I need to get out and gather some too actually. Thanks for the reminder!

How do you know when they are ripe? I've got some heads in my garden - I'd like to harvest them before they pop and send the seeds all over my garden.

You'll have to check them daily to see if the small ''seed-release-ports'' start to open, located just under the crown of the seedpod. This usually happens when the pod starts to dry out,so you can check by lightly scratching the surface of the pod. If no white juice comes out, they're probably dry enough.
Drying pods also start to form more pronounced ''ribs''.
Hope this helps any.
