Frost in May!!!!!

It's meant to be Nuts in May, surely?

I grew the most fabulous pumpkin and scallop squash plants from seed for my kids' raised allotment beds. They were so excited. Elder son just reported extreme wilting and when I dash down to see them, I note that they've been frost-nabbed last night :-(

Argh!!!!

I was *so* sure that the frosts were past. Double drat and bother...

It's not even mid May yet and the rule of thumb is wait until 1st June before you plant out anything that isn't hardy. Add two weeks if you are up north and minus 2 weeks if you are down south. You can't be surprised if your tender plants get killed at this time of year, and this year is even later to warm up than normal. :?

So does my mum! I can't remember it myself (wasn't into gardening back then  ) but she does harp on about it a lot. So she never puts anything out, not even a geranium, before June. I think that's on the cautious side but it's better to be safe than sorry.

So do I, that was 1985 and it snowed on the first of June (briefly) and a week or so later the temperatures were in the 90's F and it went on to be a 3 month drought.
Not sure I want any of those 3 combinations.

The "1st of June" rule had passed me by. Oh well, I suppose we learn by our mistakes. Thankfully I learned from last year, and planted more than I actually wanted. I have spares. And they won't be going out until June!

I had also been a *bit* cheeky and planted outside sweetcorn (I have notorious bad luck with it, so I figured it couldn't go any worse than the last three years). I was dead chuffed that it had come up. That's gone too. Oh well, my fault, and not entirely unexpected. Maybe we'll have Romanescu Caulis instead...

Shirley: "Scallop Squash" is a variety of pattypan squash - little yellow UFO shaped ones :-)

1985 - well that's why I can't remember. I was off travelling in Australia then!   Thanks for clarifying that one Tony as I thought my memory had got even worse than normal.

I missed most of the heat too, only I was in Moscow for July & August.
It was the height of the cold war and for two weeks, apart from embassy staff, I was the only English person in the whole of the USSR.
They must have though I was quite enough.
