These two decided to enter the world halfway through the school run this morning. They are about five minutes old in the pic.

only one of them lambed - we have three ewes - one islast yeas so we didn't plan anything form her, but the other ewe - we actually saw the ram doing the deed, but nowt. dunno why... we never seem to have a full house...

anyhow, we have twins from the other ewe, feb 20 (they are bigger than this now!)

They're all cute. I miss having lambs across the road from us but the wife has cancer so they got rid of their sheep.

They are beautiful! I don't know if I like the solid blacks, the little spots, or the little white one best. They are all so sweet.

I love sheep in general, but have never been able to own any (except in the freezer). Do they usually have twins? I had heard there is a gene in sheep that induces multiple births and I had also heard that if they have two they will reject one. So salve my ignorance and concern for these little beasties and fill me in please.

oooh I want to sqeeze and hug them, smell their little lamby smell and tell mummy sheep she is wonderful ...

Gert is more experienced than me.. but I'd say twins is just about the norm, followed by singles, and then triplets. you do occasionally hear of quads or more, but thats rarer. Sheep only have two teats, so more than two is not ideal, but they will often manage with trips if the lambs are strong and determined.
They seem to raise twins just fine, and cant definitely count to 2! - they dont standardly reject one, but it can happen. it can happen with singles too.

Thanks red, I have goats and they are the same way. I am getting a little ram tomorrow to raise for slaughter. It doesn't usually bother me to name and baby an animal and then eat it, but I'm not sure about a sheep!

we named our first ones 'Rogan' and 'Josh'

but we give them proper names now.. it doesn't bother us.

I want to keep goats!

Red has said it all really. Twins is about the norm, and sheep will care for twins as happily as singles.

Just to update you, we had more twins born on Sunday night, one didn't make it but the other is a happy ewe lamb.
Then we had a single ewe lamb this morning.

Just for anyone who is interested, these are Black Welsh Mountain sheep and Red's are ??????? but she can tell you more about them.
