Hello. We have unpleasant little visitors again, first time in ages, and I'm not winning the battle. I've been using the straighteners to fry the eggs and wet combing every day or two, but DD still has the little sods. I'm at the point of buying nasty shampoos, but before I do, can anyone recommend a nit comb that *really* does the job? Any other advice gratefully received.

When you wash their hair apply lots of conditioner, leave it for a while and them comb thru. The conditioner helps stop the eggs sticking to the hair. Also a couple of drops of tea tre oil in the shampoo bottle helps. Good luck - thankfully mine are now past that stage but I remember it well

tons of conditioner works a treat. when my little one had them a few weeks ago, i spent the first week combing through everyday with a lice comb and lots of tea tree conditioner i then did it every couple of days and now hes lice free i still make a point of combing through his hair every week.

i got my comb from boots, its one of those with metal teeth it works just fine as ive found the plastic ones hurt a lot, i did have a comb that had two rows of metal teeth that was really really good but i cant seem to find one now

Thanks. I'm going to get a 'Nitty Gritty' comb as they seems to be the business, and will comb through with lots of conditioner. I always used to put a couple of drops of tea tree oil in her bath but haven't bothered in a while, but I'll go back to doing that too, plus tying her hair up and not letting her out of the house, that ought to do it

my younger sister gets them constantly in the summer months. grrr have you tried a "robi-comb" its battery powered and basically shocks the little beggars to death ! try also neem oil based shampoos the nits really dont like it and its nice for your hair too

A vote for a Nitty Gritty comb here, plus use Neem conditioner or Neem oil when you comb through as this seems to deter the little buggers.

Cooking oil on the head will smother the bastards. have to leave it on for 1/2 and hour or so though and repeat every 2 days for about a week. don't forget to hot wash the bedding - pillowcases especially, and also the hairbrushes.
As far as combs go my money is on the metal ones.

Mrs D, speak to your Health Visitor before buying a Nitty Gritty - some health boards will allow the HV to write you a prescription for one, rather than having to buy one.

Just to update, we found a cheap Nitty Gritty comb and after two sessions DD was clear. It was lovely to have all the eggs out too. I made up a spray with water, conditioner, tea tree oil and rosemary oil and it worked really well

We have a metal tooth one from the local co-op pharmacy. it's fab.
