New curtain lining from mattress!

I posted a while ago about recycling my old mattress as the council don't do that around here. I was horrified at the thought of such a big thing just going into the land fill. Anyway, I decided to strip it down myself. I only needed sharp scissors to cut the various fabrics off it and I was left with the metal springs that could then be recycled (I couldn't find anyone to use them unfortunately). My mattress didn't have any sharp springs but be careful if yours does! What I cut off was fabric, wadding, and woolen type sheeting which I put in the washing machine. I used the fabric for rags, the wadding to make new cushions, but the woolen sheeting was the most exciting! I used this to make lining for my curtains and that room is now the warmest! I'm really impressed with the difference thick lining on your curtains makes and I'm happy that I managed to reuse things!

 funny isn't it? - we're saving up at the moment for a new mattress as the current one is many years old, but now I just want to get the scissors to it and find out what's inside ...

What an excellent idea. I have a friend who works for the environment agency and they are always fishing mattresses out of rivers and streams. They can be really difficult to get rid of.

So much from one waste item.
