ONE MIDWIFE

ONE VISION - We want every woman in the UK from whatever background and socio-economic status to have the opportunity to choose their lead professional (midwife) and be provided with a maternity service built upon Choice, Information and Partnership.

To achieve this we have formed a group to campaign for government implementation of the Independent Midwives Association's (IMA) proposed 'NHS Community Midwifery Model'.

We only have one midwife at our GP, so the idea of choice is a good one- but choice is only viable with an alternative available. How are independant midwives funded?- I must admit I only scanned the article as "mummy samidge" (sandwich) was being repeated constantly, which diverted my attention! But I'm all for proper antenatal care, with competent, chosen professionals

Independant midwives are paid for by the mothers themselves (Ive just caught a programme on telly about home deliveries!) it seems to be pricey (costs on the programme were quoted at £2-4,000) but that covers you for all the pre-natal care as well as the birth and post-natal care. The lady on the programme wanted a home delivery after having a previous c-section but no NHS doctor or midwife would agree to cover her as she had a 3% chance of the scar tearing,her hubby found out about independant midwives and she used one to have the home delivery she wanted. I was in tears when she gave birth to her little boy in a paddling pool in her lounge!

I just wanted to show my support for this post and I am SO pleased that the OMOM campaign has reached this far! I have been involved in it for a while now and would just like to urge everyone to sign the petition and if you can spare the time, write to your MP. Failing standards of maternity care for women and babies are regularly on the news and yet the Gov still insist on coming up with stoopid ideas to fix it as opposed to listening the the people who know the most about birth - The MIDWIVES and the MOTHERS!!!!!

I had an awful time first time round with my sin and suffered form years of Post natal depression. I was terrified when I got preggers again and when I was threatened with and early induction we bit the bullet and hired and Independent Midwife (Andrya Prescott) the gorgeous woman who is on no less than 2 soon to be 4 homebirth diaries!! On Disc Home and Health. I had a wonderful home water birth at 41 weeks. Andrya proved to be the most amazing midwife and I was transformed as a person and a mother hence me being here and able to care about veggies and chooks as well as cope and LOVE being with me chillerns!! I am een about to embark on Home edding which when I was depressed would have been unthinkable as I just didn;t think I could cope with my son or think he liked me very much. Well I am waffling but what i want to say is that a good birth can be an incredibly healing experience and I thank my lucky stars that I was fortunate enough to have the means to afford an Independent Midwife. But this shouldn;t be a luxery it should be every womans right to be supported by someone SHE has chosen and who SHE has a relationship with. Please support it and it has a Yahoo group where we discuss ideas and things........I kinda rambled towards the end there but you hopefully get what I mean!!!!
