This method relies on the root of the bean holding the putting medium together. However, this means your roots are constricted a bit which isn't ideal. In practice if you make sure that your bottom inch of compost is well packed down it'll swell a bit when it's wet and usually won't fall out if you're careful. Just don't leave it too long before planting out.

I use fruit punnets for the loo rolls - 8 of them usually fit into one punnet. I stick them in, fill them with compost (with the help on a old funnel, the long bit cut off to make the opening a bit wider - also useful for filling jam jars), and then put the seed in. The punnet holds them together and keeps the moisture in, too (unless they are the type with holes - then you need another tray underneath). By the time I plant them out the roots have done the trick and not too much falls out the bottom.
