I find it amusing that some many global warming "sceptics" whitter on about how greening measures are going to ruin the economy seemingly unaware that even it GW does emerge as a non-item* there is another great big reason why we need to have a proper energy policy that doesn't include oil and gas. Good on the IEA. About bloody time.

* Personally I have no idea whether the sceptics are right or not; I subscribe to the view given the horrible consequences that are possible if nothing is done it is better to do it. If that makes sense.

by QB comes back
I think this is an issue which is becoming more visable to the general public. However I think much of the media attention is still focusing on the wrong areas, e.g. personal car use. Much more pressing is that oil is used for fertiliser and we just don't have enough organic matter to replace it. And oil is used for transporting food.

On the plus side I know the EU is thinking and researching more actively into food security at the moment and I reckon Defra is too because they've even approached Mr. QB for his thoughts and plants and food security aren't really his field. At least they're exploring all avenues though.

If you read 'Taste' by someone (remind me to get the authors name) you can find out about the history of cooking in the British Isles from pre-Roman times up until Hugh Fernly-what's-his-name. Reading the WW2 chapter is very worrying, people really had it tough then and some of the other chapters are also worrying. The medieval chapter talks a lot about pottage and dried peas, so as an experiment this year we decided to grow as many peas as possible and dry them for the winter. Gosh was it a shock :pale: The amount of space and pea plants you'd need to sustain your family through the winter and spring is huge. I'd question it's viability.
