Since a few years ago - I forget when; the 1960s I think - any property or piece of land that gets bought or sold has to be registered with the Land Registry. Provided the last transaction happened after this, then if you know the address, you can find out who owns it - it's public information. You can get the registered owner for a fee of £2 - have a hunt around the site for details of how to do it. I did it once; it's easy, and doesn't take long. Of course, it may show that the registered address of the owner is the property itself, but if it is owned by a landlord, you should get his address.

I guess knocking on neighbour's doors may help - some people spend a long time in one house, and may know stuff from way back.

If you want to know about average house prices in a road, try Net House Prices. Lots of local info from Up My Street, and lots of graphs of price trends at Proviser

Local councils often have lists of land/property for sale that they no longer need, try visiting your local councils website and searching for "for sale" and see what it comes up with.
