My friends garden that I am helping to design needs two or three small fruit trees - definitely one apple... any good cropping tasty ones you can recommend would be appreciated.

I think you really need to find a local supplier to answer that question - fruit is very much a local thing, what crops well here in Scotland probably wouldn't do at all well in your area. And again, if you want small ones, the supplier needs to tell you what size they are likely to grow to; most are quite small nowadays, anyway. A mail-order fruit specialist should be able to advise you; taste, on the other hand, is very much a personal thing... My friend doesn't like red apples, and I don't like green ones! Always think they look unripe.
