... cut my own hair?

I just saw that Lidl's have "professional hair clippers" on special next week. Since last time I went to the hairdresser and paid far too much for a not-very-good cut (short), I was thinking I might be able to do better myself - but I don't really know how this works with one of those clippers, especially if you don't want a no. 2 job, but slightly longer! The blurb says up to 30mm long, which is what the longest of my hair tends to be after a cut...

Does anybody here cut their own like that? Please note, I don't have a handy OH to do it for me...

Hi Ina

I cut my own hair wit one of those things, but as a bloke it's a bit easier really as I just do that crew cut thing. The OH refuses to let me near her hair with it

Me too, although I don't do it myself ... OH is handy at that.
Mine has a range of comb heads and I (personally) do my beard with No 3 and finish with No 1
Mrs Odsox does my hair with (winter) No 8 and (summer) No 4
Maximum size is No 9

Sounds awfully technical, doesn't it

my mum regularly cut my hair with the poodle trimmers when i was much younger! :thumbleft:
honestly, they wernt trimmers specifically designed for poodles .. sorry i cant remember the name
but it was just cheaper with 4 kids to buy a trimmer set with lots of heads and do it yourself!
also the hair is compostable, i think

I cut my hair myself using scissors, I cut OHs hair using clippers (no.4)

TBH I'm not sure how else you are going to know without buying them and trying it Ina.... make sure it comes with the biggest size first.

Oh, it can make your arms sore, because you have to hold them up for so long.

Thanks for the warning!

Well, I'll see what I'll do - used to cut my own when I was younger and my hair was longer. Could do it with scissors then. If it turns out really terrible, I'll just have to stay indoors for a few weeks...

 if it's not right just wear a jazzy bandana as a 'fashion statement' (I did years ago after a particularly dreadful 'perm') I'll bet no-one will comment.

My mum used to cut her hair 'to three fingers'
comb hand through hair
tilt so your littlest finger is next to head
chop off the bit between third and fourth finger from head
and repeat til nothing is that long

just measured my fingers - that would make it about 60mm long, so if you want it shorter perhaps two fingers worth would do it?

I bet they would - it's just not quite my style...

But thanks for the tip. I used to do it in a similar way when I had my hair longer - used to kind of take fistfuls of hair and cut off what stuck out. Mmh. Might have to let it grow a bit longer before I try anything. It's the back of my head I'm a bit worried about - difficult to reach. Or I'll have to go for a style that was fashionable a while back - long hair at the back, cropped on top.

I've been doing mine the snapdragon way since I asked about it last year - I do it a bit longer than that though and stretch my fingers to make it a bit longer as it would be too short otherwise as my fingers must be skinny (30mm would be the length if I did it without stretching) Mostly I find it works ok but occasionally I'll make the cut at the wrong angle and it will go a bit funny. It doesn't matter too much as I can always just scrunch it up to make a messy style and then noone will know that it's been cut on the wonk.

We've got a set of clippers here if you want to give it a shot Ina.

If I was near you Ina I'd do it as I do my OH's these days - and his is a lot more complicated as he wants it really short, almost shaved at the nape of the neck graduating up to about 1" long, so I have to be very, VERY, careful! I did once put the wrong head on but stopped before I caused major damage and had to fiddle around a lot to get rid of the mistake.

Thanks for the offer, MMM - but I think that would put just a few too many "hair cut miles" on the cost...

I really annoys me that "ladies" haircuts are so much more expensive than men's - I don't get a different cut from them, do I...

just a warning about doing it yourself with grooming people!
my older sister cut her fiances hair once with a clipper and unfortunatly the head was loose and came off!
she gouged a 3 inch line that went straight to the scalp! it say he was furious would be a major understatement :angryfire:
afetr chasing her around the garden for 10 mins he finally calmed down and let my mum try to repair the damage
he had to go to work with a baseball cap for at least a couple of weeks, his coworkers never let him forget it
so the moral is that self grooming can be cheaper but if done wrong can have serious consequences for your love life!
