Hi everyone,
After 15 years of being a vet in other practices I've gone and set up my own practice. I don't claim to be an expert when it comes to chickens, but will claim to be very enthusiastic about them, after keeping a variety on the smallholding for the past 4 years. We've got a light sussex cockerel, some light sussex hens, Aurancanas, Black Rocks and Turkeys and sheep. If you live in the Perth area we'd love to see you (VERY competitive prices).

Hi Mary, just a quick message from another vet to wish you luck with your new venture. It's a daunting decision to set up on your own so hope it goes very well. Amanda (another vet) and I are moving to a smallholding nr Falkirk in the next month so we may well call upon your expertise as we are both 100% small animal specialists so our livestock expertise is a bit dated!

How are things going? I was at Stirling poultry sale on Saturday and bought some more chickens!!!!! A trio of Marans and some quail - it is becoming an obsession....... My daughter fell in love with a Poland cockerel and was most upset when we didn't get him - maybe next time.

Thanks for the link. We're trying to expand the smallholding side of the vet practice - after all this is my first love! So far I've operated on chickens - mainly fixing wounds, treated prolapses, foot problems and feather / skin problems. Have a look at http://www.theveterinarysmallholder.com/ for more info.

Mary thanks very much for the advice - I have moved it into the bumblefoot thread as it makes more sense to keep the info together. It's a bit of a hopeless situation I think but at least it has taught me to be more vigilant in checking their feet in future.

Oh how I wish we had a sympathetic vet like this down here, I was most upset when my vet refused to treat my beautiful indian runner for a prolapse last year, it may well have been hopeless but I would have like the opportunity to try

The last one is that sheep I'm reading? Kinda funny since everything else are chickens. I wish you Good luck on your new venture!

shiela - indian runners are ducks... you know, the ones that look like they are stood upright when they walk/run!
