What a fantastic programme that was. I'm feeling really rather inspired by it.

I'd never realised what a fantastic community spirit there is - and as Monty Don said at the end... don't let them disappear.. it's not just getting rid of a patch of cultivated land, it's killing off a community - (not exact words but close).

I really fancy doing the dye plants having seen this programme - and I'm now not sat thinking that my garden is a vast area that will take me ages to get sorted.. I'm going to use the tip that suggests just doing a patch at a time. As soon as this snow goes I'm going to get something in the earth.

This is the second time this programme has been on. I enjoyed it a lot and sometimes wish I had an allotment!!!! It would be more fun digging if you could be having a chat with your neighbour whilst doing it, and the chance to swap produce, seeds etc.

Wasn't that a great programme and one of the best reasons yet for putting your whole allotments over to the cultivation of gooseberries!

I'm sure that 'Gooseberry Drink' will be just the thing with a drop of Rum in it (purely for 'medicinal purposes' of course )!

tha allotments are a really good community. At ours everyone helps each other out and the younger ones dig the plots of the old guys. everyone shares seeds, seedlings, and of course the harvest. the vegetables are just passed round. I was given some leeks on Sunday, just picked and washed...made beautiful soup.....in the summer the apples, damsons etc are just shared out. Everybody gives me their green tomatoes and I supply everyone with green tomato chutney!

Hate to burst your bubble Gunners, but I do that with my carrots but still got the blooming root fly! It wasn't so bad that we couldn't eat them though, I just chop off the manky bits.

I learnt LOADS gunners - and yes, I totally agree that there should be more programmes like this. I don't have an allotment but will have a large veggie plot and would be very interested in watching something like this more often.

That sounds like heaven - I LOVE green tomato chutney.

I love the idea of people working together like that, sharing strengths and weaknesses and improving the balance of the community. People should work together like this all the time, in all sorts of situations and not just allotments.
