Keeping Bees with young children

I'd love to have a bee hive, we get through quite a bit of honey as my husband has it in his tea & also to counteract hayfever. But we have 2 small, very inquisitive boys, aged 3 & 18 months & I'm not sure how safe it would be to have a hive in the garden. If we tucked it away in a corner somewhere & fenced it off would we still see a much larger population of bees around the garden or do they travel far & wide once they leave the hive?

by having a fence and making the bees fly up your children will be quite safe.

Thinking of getting some ourselves, we have a toddler too... so this is reassuring. How big do you think a fence ought to be? and how far away will the bees travel?
