Out walking the dogs this morning when I came across a large strand of them just inside the tree-line of our woods - what could be more perfect on today of all days?

Finding St Georges mushrooms on St. Georges day?
Yes? No?
Anyway, they were delicious fried up with this morning's egg and bacon and I'll be taking my basket out with me again when we walk the dogs later.

My fault I think, I thought it would be cool to let the title run into the text. Next time I shall be less obscure!
Still, my excuse is I was overcome by a little frisson of happiness at finding the 'right' fungi on the right day. I've been searching high and low for the things you see, and didn't think we'd be lucky.

Hah! Patron Saint of the Boy Scouts. I did not know that.
I am a firm believer in the Scouting organizations. They have always taught self-sufficiency.

As a scout myself, I never knew there were such shrooms. I was marching on parade on sunday though. A glorious day and an incredible number of scouts there it was really heartening.
Next time we are on camp maybe we should keep a look out for them they tie in nicely with scouting in more ways than one - don't think we'll pick or eat them thou as I said previous I'm no expert. (esp. when I'm in charge of other peoples offspring!)

I think it's always interesting to look & learn, even if you never intend to take and use. There's so many avenues of interest that there's bound to be some way it could tie in with scout activities. Medicinal uses, culinary uses, cultural & historical record, folklore etc.
