Today we recieved the approval (and government subsidy) for a grid connected 1 Kw solar array. The government gives us $8000 and we have to put in the rest, about $4500.
We will be getting it installed as soon as they can manage it!

Cor, that's a BIG subsidy! Well done Nev! How much will you be able to run off that? Oh hang on, 1kW. Not all hairdryers then.

No m3, it is not a huge amount of power, part of the deal is cutting down on demand where we can too.
We did get an oversized inverter so we can put on another 700w of panels if and when we get the cash, to expand the system.

A common "units" error here
the number of kilowatts (kW) is the power or rate of use of energy
the number of kilowatt hours is the amount of energy used over a period.
If you like analogies think:
kW => miles per hour
kWh => miles travelled (multiply mph by hours and you get miles)
the wind industry for instance use an annual usage of 4500 to 5500kWh as the average UK home's usage - so they can say that this or that wind power scheme "will serve xxxx homes"... why can't they just use kWh? kWh are what we get billed for on our lecky bills.

My current useage and projected useage up to June 09 will be 3173kwh but if I can get shot of my crap fridge freezer for a modern one that will come down to under 2000kwh per year so well chuufed. If only I could get a grant like yours Wombat....
