Does anyone know of an alternative to cranberries that I could use to make a cranberry style sauce. I am looking specifically for British berries, ideally obtainable in Sussex.
I don't want to buy imported cranberries from the supermarket and can't grow my own as have no room on my tiny balcony.

Morello cherries make a nice sharp sauce.

Rowanberries make a very nice sharp jelly.

I use black currants, red currants or a mix of both to have with camembert instead of cranberries. Don't know whether they'd work as well with turkey, but can't see why not?

I've been thinking about making 'cranberry' sauce with frozen redcurrants for Xmas, seeing as I'm having to make everything for Xmas this year (nobody has been to the UK in a car to stock up!).

What do cranberries taste like raw? Are they sour like redcurrants with a similar taste?

Cranberries raw are horrendous little buggers! I tried one once and it was the driest, bitterest thing I've ever put in my mouth and I only had a tiny nibble of it. They're almost like polystyrene under the skin, white and they weigh nothing.

I saw a recipe once, may have been on here for a jelly-jam made from haws and other such berries you don't normally eat but find in the hedge in autumn. It is supposed to be good with game..since we are having Goose (I hope) this Xmas I was hoping to find this recipe but havn't tracked it down yet...will start googling!
