All components of the Brita cartridge are recyclable. Cartridges returned to Brita will be returned to our own recycling plant in Germany where the component parts are separated and processed for secondary use. Germany seems a long way to send them to be recycled, but it's a start!!

I wonder how many travel miles the filter has to do before it's recycled? It's good that there's the option but I wonder if the distance almost offsets the benefit?

My wife and I used to filter our water but gradually gave up - we couldn't be organised enough to change the filters in a timely fashion and the filter jar was invariably empty when we found we needed water! Instead of recycling, we just stepped out of that particular cycle altogether.

Yeah Wulf - I did think about that. I wonder why they can't recycle them in the UK.

We have to filter our water here - in fact we are about to have a proper filter fitted as we are on a well - the water gets all sorts of insect bits coming through with it at the taps and we've been getting tummy upsets even after boiling the water (just in a normal kettle though rather than boiling for 4 mins or whatever the recommended is) - the water test showed that it has coliforms and e coli in it. Actually we have been buying bottled water for a while now - not very eco friendly I know... but better than being ill.

Pardon my noseyness, but what constitutes a "proper" filter. This is not an academic question because I have a pressure pump and want to reticulate some of my tank water.

My other half has more info on this, but basically a filter that will filter out the larger particles and then a uv light that will zap any bacterial stuff - gee I'm so technical

I'll ask David to post on this later - he's watching the rugby at the mo with our littlest - I've escaped
