Being a scientist as well as trying to become more Ish, I have become quite intrigued by the Miracle Fruit, which apparently contains a glycoprotein which attaches to the bitter taste receptors on your tongue, and causes bitter things to taste sweet.
I was just wondering if anyone on the boards had any experience with this fruit, or may be able to point me in the direction of some seeds from which I could grow my own.
I would love to experiment with these berries in my homebrew as well, make some Miracle Vodka or something of the sort, hmmm, now my mind is a-wandering.

I've vaguely heard of it but I don't know what the point is! I mean why would you want to eat bitter things anyway - just cos you could probably eat sloes doesn't necessarily mean it would be a good thing! (you'd get a dodgy stomach I imagine)

Hmm, possibly, but I still want to experiment, and possibly freak out my friends by messing with their tastebuds without telling them :p (hmmm, evilness )

I haven't tried it yet, but I have bookmarked a few websites that sell the plants, for when I move into my own place and have more room for houseplants. The sites I marked might not ship worldwide, but there's a gardening watchdog site here http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/advanced.php that you can use to find one that will. It would be a tropical plant.

A word of caution: miracle fruit may make lemons taste like sherbet and tabasco sauce taste like chocolate, but the acidity is still there. People has given themselves ulcers in their mouths and throats by going overboard. But, you can leave out the sugar in things.

Ah, if it makes SOUR things taste sweet then that I could understand! Then you could make crumble with all those sour tasting fruit, add the miracle fruit instead of sugar and hey presto a low calorie pudding! I like that idea!

Unfortunately not it seems.
I just Googled Miracle Fruit and it seems it's miraculous properties are destroyed by cooking

Ok, I have been doing a little more research, the active glycoprotein, miraculin, is denatured at high temperatures, so cooking is definitely out, freezing, however, should be fine, so rhubarb crumble with miracle ice-cream could be a possibility

Oh well we could make summer pudding with sour redcurrants and miracle fruit!

Yes the miracle berry (Synsepalum Dulcificum) is fantastic, it has many uses and is a great organic sweetener.

I tried out the berries and tablets first then i eventually purchased myself a plant from http://www.MiracleFruitHut.com, anything acidic, bitter or sour will suddenly taste sweet there is much you can try with the berry. Fruits taste amazing under its taste bud turning experiences.

I tried my first MF tablet about a month ago (green packaging) >:-( . I didn't like the acid taste that much, but the effect was off the charts! :-/

Guess what: I bought another pack a week ago, again from www.miraclefruitworld.com (well, from one of their retailers sour2sweet), sth called Miracle Frooties. They are so much better! No acid taste in my mouth, also lasts longer. Hell, at least now I know what i put in my mouth, has all the ingredients on the box, in English!, and says ISO 9001, HACCP certified. I got 600mg, so twice the size, for almost the same price. Recomend it! And if sbd is throwing a Party with the new ones, let me know :-D

i would recommend to people that the from experience the best way to try the fruit is the berry version and in its naturalest form, for which i recommend to get yourself a plant, which you can pick up in all sizes from http://www.MiracleFruitHut.com.

It works out so much better to be able to just let a plant yield lots of berries in which you can throw a really great miracle fruit party with friends and family as i have.

Yeah, I agree with you....I you have time to wait 3 years so the plant can yield. I bought one, but still I havent tried the berries from it.....
