Of course Polio kills people (or rather it used to) but this is just the sort of one-in-a-million story that is brought out to scare people into vaxing without actually giving them real info. A friend of mine, a newly qualified nurse, tells me that her colleagues when finding a parent who hasn´t vaxed their child down to see the iron lung to scare the be-jesus out of them....bet they don´t mention the last people to contract polio in the uk did so because they came into contact with the virus in the poo of a recently vaxxed kid.Stonehead wrote:And for a real-life example of life before vaccines, here's the story of woman who lived in an iron-lung for 60 years after contracting polio aged three. She died in the last day or two after a power failure stopped her iron-lung working.

Have to agree Clara. In support, and since polio has been mentioned specifically, here's an extract from a report into the polio vaccine itself. The whole report is at http://www.thinktwice.com/Polio.pdf, a US based website which nonetheless containing well sourced and research-based, referenced articles.
"Authorities claim the vaccine was responsible for about eight cases of polio every year [Institute of Medicine. An evaluation of poliomyelitis vaccine policy options. IOM Publication 88-04 (Washington DC: National Academy of Sciences, 1988).]. However, an independent study that analyzed the government’s own vaccine database during a recent period of less than five years uncovered 13,641 reports of adverse events following use of the oral polio vaccine. These reports included 6,364 emergency room visits and 540 deaths [Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), Rockville, MD., IOS. The Polio vaccine coverup COPV Vaccine Report: Document #14. www.ios.com/~w1066/poliov6.html]."
And elsewhere in the report
"Today, fact sheets on polio published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, warn parents that the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) can cause “serious problems or even death... [U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Polio: What You Need to Know, Atlanta, GA: CDC, October 15, 1991:3.]â€

Polio is no longer given as a live vaccine (in Britain)
When E go hers, the leaflets we were given still said it was but HV and doctor said they don't use the live vaccine any more.
I worry about people reading what they think is fact and getting wrong information - I think everyone needs to make there own decision but they need to check out reliable sources (for both arguments)
