I have seriously heavy periods that wipe me out and I am considering a hysterectomy (I'm 38 year old). I have to use tampons and pads and often have to change them after a few minutes (in the first few days - of about 2 weeks!)... could I use a MC or similar!?

Far out, that's full on! Well just for the money you'd save it would be worth it! my Mooncup last me about 3 x longer than a tampon between changes. If you have large clots it can fill quickly and need emptying faster but what have you got to lose? Also some women find they bleed less after a few months of MC / cloth pad use.

We don't have any sanitary products i our bathroom either - Mum's ahd a hysterectomy, and nik and i both use mooncups. I do have emergency disposables in my bedroom for visitors though.

I don't like th idea of menstrual parties i have to admit. As a teenager (or younger), periods are embarrassing. i remember my mum telling my auntie. I lost a lot of respect for her for that. i was so embarrassed when my auntie came up to me and said 'you're a real woman now'. I hated it.

I love mooncups though. I had to get a new one recently because the old one got lost in the chaos that i call my room. i bought the larger size and didn't really see any difference, but i did have to change the way i fold it to get it in.

Careful with the punch-down fold!! I often find that it will suddenly 'pop' if i haven't got it open - i'll walk somewhere, or sit down and feel a 'pop' down below. it was quite a shock the first time!

mooncups definitely have that problem - you have to tell everyone! In a way, i suppose its good because it gets women talking about themselves and their bodies. in another way, some of my friends have been horrified! i've only told those who i know will take an interest now.

Oh I remember that one... It was the day of my sister's birthday party and I was helping mum get ready... she turned to me and said "my little girl's grown up.." and smiled indulgently... I couldn't have heard anything worse.... arghhhh. Hey ho... that's mothers!

Me and mum have always had a very open relationship about periods; she thought she was dying the first time she had one and never wanted me to feel like that. I can talk to her about any body stuff... but I'd have been mortified to have a party!!!

When i started my mum kept panicking that 'cos we only had her superhuge pads in the house that I wouldn't change it often enough! one thing i used to hate is my mum's bulk buying. she bulk buys everything and i wanted to try different styles of tampons and pads etc, but I'd have to wait about 6 months to a year until I'd run out!

She bulk bought sanitary products 'cos she was set in her ways because of her own problems. She didnt realise that I wouldn't go through 36 tampons in 3 days; I don't think she realised this isn't normal until I started. she had endometrium hyperplasia where the lining keeps growing until the uterus is expanded to about 12 week pregnancy stage; then it would let rip. she nearly bled to death a few times before the NHS would realise that she did actually have a major problem.

poor you - I have a few VERY heavy days, and can report the MC is considerably better. and I go swimming every week.. and MC works fine there too.

Hmmm, budwick discussions........think I'll keep out of it.......
