After a spot of rain we now have tomatoes (mostly split) cucumber, Tuscan kale, romanesco which I am using as sprouting broccoli which tells you what happened there, and aubergine, peppers and the last of the carrots. Also picked two large split butternuts for the goats.

Hoping for beans if we get some more rain, (A few formed last week) watering does little as the ground is so hot.

Cooking apples, calabrese, dwarf beans, lettuce, courgettes, plums ... Not a bad day.

Yes, things have perked up a little here too. We've got a few tomatoes - they're not doing well though and for the first time ever we've got a bad aphid infestation! Anyhoo we also have courgettes, potatoes, purple sprouting and Romanesco.

All of which will happily accompany a small venison leg roast which is currently marinating in some home made wine and herbs.

I like days like today.

My first (two or three) runner beans are ready to go into a stir fry!

Stir fry is great for using all those things I don't have enough of...

It's quietening down up here - think that it's too chilly to get any more courgettes and pattypan squash. Have just looked at the outdoor cucumbers that are crawling round one of the beds - disturbed a frog and collected a good few, these are the short gherkin like cucumbers. Shared some with the neighbour next door as there was a good armful and his outdoor cukes got mildew/damping off. We've still got beetroot and lettuce up on the old allotment with some calabrese on the newer one. The cabbages there don't look hopeful but they went in as a soil test. There's kale doing OK. Oh and there should be a few small borlotti beans and a few runners. Had a bad year with all beans except the broad beans.

Had the first handful of brambles...

We've still got a few tomatoes but I think we need to harvest them all very soon and clear up ready for winter.

Started harvesting one of the best fruit bushes I've ever bought, Myrtle. It's just starting to ripen now and will keep on until February or March. You just can't beat picking fresh fruit from your garden in January.
It's severely neglected, now all becoming part of the rough boundary hedge, but thriving on neglect.
Tastes like ripe strawberries and very nice raw on muesli (if they make it indoors)

You can have a rooted plant Doofa, there are suckers around the base that can easily be dug.
Probably better to wait until spring though.

It's a bit bigger than mine.

We're having veg soup made from leeks, carrots and turnip, picked after our lunchtime walk - in the most glorious sunshine - with some tomatoes, which are ripening on the windowsill and some fresh beef broth. Everything has taken so long to grow this season. Most of these veg are from our first sowing in the spring! Yet they're not woody.

This season has baffled me totally, nothing seems to have grown when it should - on our way out for our walk we spotted a load of semi-ripened strawberries.

I still have a raucous riot of nasturtiums climbing up the garden fence - better than they have been all season. Suppose late salad!
