No need now . I managed to convince her that the now-filled-in pond area (still undergoing a complete revamp) would be a good place for a "test" planting to see if I've got the infill up to a fertile level. I could get a lot of plants in that area (and will if it stops raining).

Oh you're getting rain there now, my inlaws were complaining about how dry it was and that was only last Monday.

I've got one plant that has leaves about 2cm wide now but that's a lot bigger than the rest. We'll get there eventually, maybe September.

I've just planted out 30 plants of GV. Spaced about 2' apart and given them a good watering in.

Looking over tinternet they could grow to 6' tall ?

Any feeding required or just let them get on with it ?

I feed mine with diluted manure water. Smells wonderful! pbf.

How did you or your daughter shred the leaves once harvested and cured ?

I've seen a video on youtube where someone has used a pasta maker. Might have to keep my eyes out for one of them :-)

When they are really dry-takes a while depending on the weather, we had it hanging in the conservatory- we just cut out the central part of the leaf and then just crumbled it by hand, but I have always wanted a pasta machine! pbf.

I'm hoping the slicing attachment for the food processor will do the job. No, that's not true - it will do the job. I'm hoping that OH doesn't find out that I'm hoping the slicing attachment ............

I have given loads away at my plant swap yesterday but still have 6 left for me. They did start growing much quicker once I put them outside in the cold frame although they are still tiny.

They do seem to speed up once they get their roots out and about. The ones I planted out seem to have doubled in size already

Well they'd better given it's now June and the leaves are about 1-2cm big!

hey, sorry iv not been on in a while.

tobacco loves warmer climates so its probable that once you put them outside due to the low temperatures the plants have slowed down in their growth. growers tend to harden off the seedlings before transplanting outside. try applying nitrogen through the irrigation ( dissolve nitrogen fertaliser in a bucket of water) to give them a boost. dont forget to top the plants ( remove the flowering buds when they form ) to prevent all the nutrients going into the flowers instead of the leaves.
golden virginia will do well on richer soils in warmer contrys or in a polytunnel/greenhouse in brittain.

in warm weather they will up to 6' tall, even in poor soil. once transplanted outside they dont need any extra feeding, unless grown in monoculture for years ( which i doubt applys to you )
