I never thought you would actually read this!Stonehead wrote:Millymollymandy wrote:Eeeks I have just re-read the bit about being banished to an island - all this time I thought it said DESERT ISLAND, so I thought Stoney would be handy for building me a house and catching my dinner.![]()
However, it could be an idyllic island with a nice house and all mod cons in Greece, so in that case I'd take my husband!![]()

Only just saw this. Don't worry about the husband and the mod cons, I'm out to build a raft right now. I've never had anyone propose I play big strong hunter-gatherer builder on a desert island before!!![]()
Now, how do I break this to the Other Half.......

Either a writer or an adventurer. I made one of them.
What do you do for work now?
I'm a writer.
Who introduced you to Selfsufficientish thinking?
Well ... no one, really,. I grew up in the Australian bush in the 1950s and boy, then you were largely self-sufficient! LOL We grew and trapped most of what we ate, and made do with what we had or could scrounge from the local community. Then we moved to the city and also to the Dark Side.
What was the first thing you ever planted?
I can't remember - it was too long ago. I have always grown things.
What was the first food you ever caught to eat?
It would have been either a sheep, a rabbit or a chicken - we caught/trapped and killed and butchered all these in my childhood.
What was the first thing you ever dismantled?
A skeleton clock.
What is under your bed?
a lot of dust, some spare blankets and a soap box full of soap.

A lot of cat hair. (No pictures)
What scares you?
Huntsman spiders. The UK does not have huntsman spiders. I may move there.
What gave you your last big belly-laugh?
Watching the cats fight over the corpse of a rat.
What is the first thing you see when you walk out your back door?
A bloody damned bugger of a heritage listed hawthorn hedge which causes much angst between me and my neighbours. Rotten thing. I'll take the kero and a match to it one day.
What did you eat for tea last night?
Homemade (and grown!) potato, onion and pumpkin soup.
What charity/ies do you support?
A local cat shelter, and a university library in another state of Australia.
What is your least favourite chore/job around the house?
Cleaning out the cat run.
If you were to be banished to an island for 2 years, and could take one person with you, Who would you take and why?
Tom Good - he'd be handy. Or my father. That would be good, too. Or Johnny Depp. Dang. I just can't make up my mind.
What was the last CD that you bought?
The Johnny Depp produced really roooooode Pirates chanty cd - fabulous!
What was the last gift you were given that you really didn't want? And what did you do with it?

And then I wiped my fingerprints off everything that might incriminate me.

What nickname did you have as a kid?
I didn't really have any! I get called 'bear' now and then now, and a lot of the folks I know irl now are folks I met online so they use my variety of online names.
What did you want to be when you were "all growed up"?
I first wanted to be a vet, then I realised that I would have to put animals down, so I decided to be a nurse, because people are easier!
What do you do for work now?
I'm an agency nurse, working in a load of different places each week!
Who introduced you to Selfsufficientish thinking?
My mother has always grown her own veg, and my father is a scarily ethical vegan person. Also, living in Stroud, the idea is all around us, with the amount of farmers markets and green thinking that floats around.
What was the first thing you ever planted?
Roses!
What was the first food you ever caught to eat?
A nettle flower! (I'm vegetarian and never knowingly eaten meat!)
What was the first thing you ever dismantled?
Oh lord, probably a car, with my father. On my own, an elderly cottage's plumbing.
What is under your bed?
A draw full of bedding and (currently) a small puppy trying to get to whatever has caught her imagination.
What is on your mouse pad?
It isn't so much a mouse pad as a piece of old cork. Currently, my work papers and diary, and a todo list.
What scares you?
No laughing please. Needles!
What gave you your last big belly-laugh?
Watching our puppy 'defend' next door's garden from next door.
What is the first thing you see when you walk out your back door?
The dog yard, and the roses and the tomatos I put in last night.
What did you eat for tea last night?
Potatoes cooked slowly with rosemary in the oven, peas and some dreadful bake thing I bought to try. *shudders* Luckily the dogs liked it and we had cheese on toast.
What is your least favourite chore/job around the house?
Putting the laundry away!
If you were to be banished to an island for 2 years, and could take one person with you, Who would you take and why?
Probably my husband, since we can talk for some hours without actually making any sense at all.
What was the last CD that you bought?
A beautiful south CD
What was the last gift you were given that you really didn't want? And what did you do with it?
I think it was a dvd player from my grandmother, and I gave it to my daughter to use in her room.
What is the most annoying thing you do (according to your mate/mum/kid/neighbour etc.)?
I want to get *everything* done now, and start everything new now. I'm told I should slow down and plan everything...
What is your favourite drink?
Gin and tonic please
Where is your favourite place in the whole wide world?
Either my home or the garden at the moment. The garden is so restful, with the lack of noise and the view...

What nickname did you have as a kid?
I didn't really have one - my father used to refer to me as "the beatnik"
What did you want to be when you were "all growed up"?
I'm still trying to decide...but I did want to do something like work with animals. I've worked with actors and children. I thnk animals would be much easier!
What do you do for work now?
Maternity leave at mo - but I was working with children doing craft/activity days, and in pre-schools etc.
Who introduced you to Selfsufficientish thinking?
My father, who was already recycling and growing his own veg long before it became an alternative. I feel ashamed of the way I used to berate him for not getting rid of things, then for not recycling (even tho he was in his own way anyway!)
What was the first thing you ever planted?
Hard to remember as I'm sure I planted stuff when young, but took great pride in a greenhouse full of chillis a couple of years ago
What was the first food you ever caught to eat?
We caught a fish, in Sweden when I was four. We were all a bit traumatised (an aquatic Stand by me) seeing it's dead body, so we silently took it home and fed it to next door's cat.
What was the first thing you ever dismantled?
Probably a roller skate or some toy, and couldn't get it back together. I'm dismantling recipes all the time, in a devil may care way, while my husband holds steadfastly to the recipe book
What is under your bed?
Hidden birthday presents, lots of ballycumbers (meaning of liff-ism for half read books), a knitting machine I don't know how to use, and half a pack of newborn nappies I will never need again...
What is on your mouse pad?
A photo of my first-born in his xmas show looking the saddest reindeer in the shed
What scares you?
The thought of my children falling off a big cliff. I am nowhere near a big cliff, but I get gripped by irrational fear of this happening evry now and again
What gave you your last big belly-laugh?
My husband's photocard for his teaching union. Who'd employ a dead guy?
What is the first thing you see when you walk out your back door?
Next doors washing, our valiant xmas tree and a coiled hosepipe, sadly redundant due to the waterbutt
What did you eat for tea last night?
Sticky toffee pudding and custard - I'd had a late lunch and only fancied treats.
What charity/ies do you support?
Whales and dolphins with money, then oxfam/traidcraft with occasional donations and these gifts that give. Occasionally cancer charities
What is your least favourite chore/job around the house?
sitting still. I have to to feed my infant, to let my infant sleep and to recover from the 'orrible rigours of birth. I'm not a sit-stiller tho.
If you were to be banished to an island for 2 years, and could take one person with you, Who would you take and why?
Don't know - I don't want to choose an answer that would alienate me from my family
What was the last CD that you bought?
scissor sisters
What was the last gift you were given that you really didn't want? And what did you do with it?
We got a few items of clothing for the new baby which I thought were unsuitable so I took them to the shop and got a credit note. I resisted the urge to spend it all on me! I'll wait and see what is suitable for the tike.
What is the most annoying thing you do (according to your mate/mum/kid/neighbour etc.)?
Stress about being late (especially in those long ago days of going to the cinema).
What is your favourite drink?
Right now, it is uninterrupted good ground fairtrade coffee, with a brown fairtrade sugar and organic milk, sipped while flicking through "Green Parent" or "Ecologist". This never happens, so it's cold gulped fairtrade coffee, while packing the (real) nappy bag and shovelling banana into our toddler halfway out of the door
Where is your favourite place in the whole wide world?
I enjoyed being inside the oak tree in Eardisley, I liked the CAT, and West Kennet long barrow where my husband proposed. However, I enjoy most wild places and most stone circles, and tops of mountains. I like Sweden, but don't travel well.
It's quite nice to be allowed time to be in the bath nowadays.
That's all folks!

Re: Getting to know you...
What nickname did you have as a kid?
"Oi, you" from certain teachers. I worked hard at not being memorable as that allowed me to get away with a lot of practical jokes and pranks.
What did you want to be when you were "all growed up"?
Just be me. That meant finding something that would allow me to go to sea, have a farm, drive interesting cars, write, tinker with machines and gadgets, and just have an adventurous life. I've managed all of those!
What do you do for work now?
Crofter. That manages to cover all aspects of my ambitions except going to sea, but I've managed a bit of that along the way so that's all right.
Who introduced you to Selfsufficientish thinking?
It's genetic. Vast tracts of my ancestors were crofters and Irish bog farmers back to the year dot, then emigrated (or were transported) to Australia where they lived the pioneering life for generations. My parents, grandparents, and many other relatives were all self reliant types who never wasted anything, never threw anything away, built their own houses, reared animals, grew crops, went gold prospecting etc. You name it, they did it and did it themselves.
What was the first thing you ever planted?
I started helping my dad plant vegetables when I was three or four.
What was the first food you ever caught to eat?
Insects aside?
Probably a rabbit or a fish.
What was the first thing you ever dismantled?
That I can remember? A steam traction engine when I was about four. A few months before that I did my first house renovation job - painting the bathroom black.
What is under your bed?
Goblins, trolls, mugwumps, bunyips, and other things that go bump in the night. (Well, that's what the boys believe... )
What is on your mouse pad?
Peanut butter. It works every time.
What scares you?
Too little for my own good. Our youngest boy is the same.
What gave you your last big belly-laugh?
Telling the story of "Wee Rabbie" to the children at playgroup today and see the looks on their faces when Wee Rabbie, now a pigeon, drops a millstone on his Mam's head! (Well, she had made him into stew... )
What is the first thing you see when you walk out your back door?
Something different every day. No days are alike on the croft and today was typical - I looked out the door to see three rabbits happily munching the grass three feet away. They were lucky - I had to decide between a naked hunting session or a shower. Fortunately for everyone, the shower won!
What did you eat for tea last night?
Home-made pea soup with soda biscuits.
What charity/ies do you support?
None. I'll help people directly and not pay someone else to do it for me.
What is your least favourite chore/job around the house?
I can't think of any. I'm not even bothered by cleaning the septic tank.
If you were to be banished to an island for 2 years, and could take one person with you, Who would you take and why?
The correct answer? The OH.
The fun answer? MMM - because no one has ever wanted to be on a desert island with me before.
The true answer? Nobody, two years as a hermit would suit me fine.
What was the last CD that you bought?
I've only every bought vinyl.
What was the last gift you were given that you really didn't want? And what did you do with it?
Everything gets put to good use - even if not quite in the way intended. I'll say no more as certain people may read this!
What is the most annoying thing you do (according to your mate/mum/kid/neighbour etc.)?
Too blunt, too forthright, too opinionated, too "colonial" (as my last UK employer put it).
What is your favourite drink?
Water. Then cider or nettle ale.
Where is your favourite place in the whole wide world?
Wherever I happen to be at any given time.
