Well I had a wonderful night last week. I went to sleep with HFW and woke up with Alan Davis. It took me ten minutes to work out that River Cottage had finished and Qi had started

I think the oxy watsit is the little stock cube you use to make the sauce that goes with the middle class badger I wonder if HFW knows how controversial?( sorry not good with the spelling) cooking fresh meat and veg apparently is.

Ah that's what it is - I thought it was some cleaning agent or other.

I enjoy watching his programmes, just kinda got out of the habit, saw too many repeats.
Whatever the controversy is over his financial position etc, it's interesting stuff and gives some good info and ideas.
Now I know there's a new series on will set the TV.

An oxymoron is a statement that has contradictory elements.
You implied that you wouldn't "slag off" the working class when you had already done so by referring to them as the "great unwashed"

Oh I see! We did learn about hyperboles (whatever they are) and, um, and, other things like that such as noises which sound like the things they describe e.g. buzzy bees (what's that called - oh I remember one of the other words - onamatapia and no I can't spell it!) but never oxymorons!

Edit: Onomatopoeia - I can spell normally but no wonder I can't spell that!!

I work for a living so I guess I must be working class....never gave it much thought....as we say up here "We're aw Jock Tamsons Bairns"we all come into the world the same way and go out the same way it's what we do in the middle part that matters.

I LOVE Hugh.
We get all his programmes down here - they even time them to the seasons.
Before we moved to NZ I had never had a garden before let alone a small farm so I find it all very interesting.
I do get a bit hacked off when they sort of swan around their veggie gardens though - I slave in mine

Where we live is rural and nowhere near any cities, so our super market shopping is very limited. Which I think is flipping great. It makes us go to local markets, use the butchers and catch our own fish. My DH is the cook in our family and has always cooked from scratch anyway so nothing's changed there. But I do love nipping out to the garden and coming in with veggies etc and just making dinner with what we have.

A few years ago we had one of our cows homekilled and got all the meat ( well shared it with friends as well) but there are only 2 of us and I don't eat much meat so we decided we wouldn't do it again, as some of it just didn't get eaten - dogs loved it though!

We're lucky, but we're not totally self sufficient, but are in veggies, some meat, eggs, and water and sewage ( lovely!)
Also our neighbours grow things we don't - like one across the road has an avocado orchard so we swap eggs for avocados.

The only thing the tv programmes forget to mention is how much blooming hard work it all is! I don't work - in that I don't have a job outside of the farm, this is my job and it's 7 days a week, and our farm is tiny, and there is no way on this earth we make a living from it - lovely hubby goes out to work to pay for the farm!

Can I just butt in and say what fabulous photos on your blog Darroch - how do you take such clear close ups? If you'd been a member when we had our 'Wild' photo competition recently you could have won with that bee on the borage!

The secret is that I have quite a good camera with a macro lens. My macro lens and I are joined at the hip!

Ah! Is that a separate lens (I don't know much about photography) rather than just a macro setting? Cos my husband has a good SLR digital but he informs me that these days you can get cameras with twice as much ... (oh dear don't know technical term but ability to take bigger better clearer close ups!) as his, typical isn't it you spend good money and a few years later something is out of date. I just have been a bit envious of late seeing people's macro photos and wondering why his camera doesn't seem to do the same.

it is a separate lens. I've got an dSLR as well, it's a few years old, but I love it! It's the lenses that make the difference to me, but I got my macro second hand - camera equipment is so expensive new, but you can sometimes get good deals on second hand stuff when people are upgrading. Just got to be careful it hasn't been bashed around!
Best thing you can have for macro stuff is a steady hand :)

Cheers Darroch, I must ask him what separate lenses he has as I know he has telephoto ones (these are all from the old non digital - he bought the same camera in digital format because of that) - I'm just normally a point and shoot type of photographer on idiot proof setting - even when I try something clever it all seems to come out the same but I'm getting more interested in macro shots and photography in general, maybe one day I may even read the manual on how to use the camera.
