However big photos 4Mb taken on a digital SLR camera can't be reduced without losing picture quality!!!!!!

I have some differbegging to do here, you CAN reduce the size of a 4mpx photograph without loss of quality by upping the resolution of your final resize. for instance on photoshop if you use image>image size, don't just reduce the size in cms or pixels, go down to the bottom and up the resolution. it's normally around 72dpi for a photograph to be used on the web. if your picture starts off at 60cms wide and you reduce it to 30cms for instance, up the resolution at the same time. you ndont necessarily need to double the resolution, i find anything between 96 and 144 dpi works well. try a few, check them you'll eventually find one that works for you which is a balance between size and resolution.

although bearing in mind when people look at photos on the web the quality is governed not by the resolution of the photograph but by the quality and resolution of the monitor used so anything above 96dpi you wont see the benefiot unless you're viewing it in print format.

I have a 10mpx camera. online there's little difference in the quality of lesser pixelation, but in print i see the difference so much.

hope this helps.

I can also give instructions for how to do this on GIMP and fotostation too.

I've just had a fiddle Mrs Flibble but the trouble is that I normally reduce a photo from 42" to 20" as I can upload from my PC onto forums at that size. However when Iupped the resolution it took the photo size down to 12". ??? So now it is a teeny photo that doesn't look any clearer than before. I will try uploading it here.....

Nope now it says that the photo is too large??????? yet it is now only 12" but more than 2MB. When it is 20" it is only about 250Kb!!!

P.S. I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro.

I've started a new topic in Tips, Hints and problems called "Posting photos". Can we devote this thread to people's lovely photos?

Rob I know you asked before but it proved impossible to take some of the postings out and put elsewhere. You can split a topic but not put some of the postings in one thread and some in another.

I think it is very pertinent to the thread to be discussing the best ways for us to show our photos for a competition though - as what we see on our own monitors when the photos are in all their full size glory is very different sometimes when they have been reduced to a size that is acceptable to upload on a forum, sadly. So we DO need to discuss the best way to show off our photos - it is a competition after all (with a prize!), not just ANY old photo we're showing in any old thread.

But for next month yes, we can definitely do our discussing there, if that is what you want. That will mean NO COMMENTS ON ANYONE'S PHOTOS though, at all. Purely photos and that is it. Which is a real shame when you want to ask someone a question about their photo. :(

There's no need to take it to extremes... Why the resistance to discussing photo resizing as a separate topic?

And I don't see why we should not be discussing it in the thread where our photos are! It's just two people's difference of opinion - and you seemed not to like people discussing anything on the thread and wanted purely the photos there! I don't think anyone else was bothered. :?

I think that is a wonderful picture malcom. Sorry I didn't give a vote, some how it got overlooked as I made my way through all the discussions. Kicking myself now.

I have to agree with Rod, the photo competition needs to be more pictures, it is so hard to see the pictures against each other.

Is there anyway you can cross reference with phpBB. i.e. copy a link to a particular post, so it can be discussed ina companion board?

Just a thought... great selection of photos, sorry that I didn't have anything to submit this time round, I imagined a big reefer of bud would not get any votes :flower:
