We've had problems with rats in the Dalek-style compost bins and we only compost peelings etc, no meat or fish. We overcame it by putting a piece of chicken wire underneath, the fluids can run out, the worms can get in, but the vermin are kept away. It's because of the potential vermin problem though that I'm looking to use a wormery at home and just have the bins on the allotment.

I knew that Green Cones were targeted by vermin so this is news to me. Your solution is the same as the Green Cone and should be totally effective.

Animal home = warm, dark and dryish.
Bottom of compost heap = warm, dark and dryish.

Therefore, given half a chance, animal home = bottom of compost heap.

You can easily get lots of over-wintering animals in there. That's a good thing - not only are you preparing wonderful stuff for the garden, but you're doing your bit for wildlife at the same time. I can understand people not wanting rats anywhere near their homes - but hedgehogs, voles, grass snakes, frogs, toads and newts can do with all the help you can give them.

I forgot to mention Composting liquid. I used this and had a wet composting set up. That may explain the lack of vermin.
