When I found a dead cat in my front garden (been hit by a car) I posted a "found" ad in the local paper. Found ads are free in our local. First I checked locally and the vet did a microchip test but no luck.
I didn't say the cat was dead I just said I had found a cat and gave location and description. The owner contacted me, and, when I was sure it was hers, I explained that it was dead and what I had done with it.
I lost a cat once and never found it again. I was upset for a long time not knowing what had happened to it and I would have been grateful for someone telling me it's outcome. The owner seemed grateful.
Maybe you could place an ad. It may be free as my local paper does found ads for free.
