always wonder why we shove the concept of democracy at other countries so much, when we don't practise it ourselves....

<sucks breath> Steady on, Red.

Wasn't it Churchill who said that we have the worst form of democracy in the world, except for all the others?

I think he said that democracy was the worst form of government in the world, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.

The problem with democracy, like any other ideal such as communism, is that it requires all the people to believe in the same ideal and put their personal desires to one side in the cause of the common good. :drunken:

I'm still waiting to see if we have to go do it all again up here, if Labour and the Lib Dems decide to join "forces" against the SNP!

true democracy can only work in very small groups - it involves all people making decisions not just voting for the least worst candidate (in your opinion) to make decisions for us.
"whoever you vote for government wins".
personally i'm a firm believer in consensus decision making.

i voted for the first time this year (i'm 18 not lazy ) and got very excited putting a cross next to the green party's candidate, even though i knew this vote would not get him any power. This makes me think that really a PR system, such as Germany's would be best as it gives everyone a chance to air their opinions in parliament and would give a truer representation of the country. But as demonstrated in Germany radicals can gain a foothold upon which to build. it really is difficult to say any system is perfect.
