have put in rows of carrot and onion, 8 more strawberry plants and pullled out about a barrow load of horsetail ¬_¬

sowed some more cuecumber seed and pink bana squash earthed up spuds in poly tunnel cut wood for net props

Dug the allotment over (was inactive for about 2-3 years)
Created first raised bed 8' x 4' x 8"
Planted Comfrey roots down by the shed.
Started Savoy, Sweetcorn, Beetroot.
Separated and potted around 50 chillis & sweet-peppers.
Netted the onions (some are coming through - ) 50 red, 50 white
Put 2 x 15' Nepalese-Prayer-Flag ropes onto a pole over the fruit (blackcurrants, redcurrants, gooseberries, raspberries.
Umm... think that was about it.

nyghtowl, are the prayer flags for bird scarers? that's a good idea!

today i had one of my neighbours kids with us, and he did the watering, i do hope carrott seedlings can swim :S
fleece covered the carrot and onions, and garlic and spinach.
am going away for 4 days, and it's feeling like leaving a child in the care of neighbours, i'm really concerned!! :D

Yes, they are indeed!

I know that it is a little oxymoronic to use 5-colour Buddhist prayer-flags to deter birds but it's not damaging so I guess Buddha would be OK with it :D

perhaps the birds will become so tranquil and 'at one'' with your plot they will choose not to eat your crops, surviving on the energy of the universe instead.... or next doors crops. ;)

The flags-a-prayin'

I took some annual leave and have been very busy in the garden. I've tilled 3 vegetable patches from scratch. It was back breaking as the ground was hard and the soil poor. I had to dig in tons of soil enricher etc. I've planted peas which had grown very well in the greenhouse, planted second earlies, onions, garlic and sown meadown seeds in four very big hedgerows. In terms of flowers I've planted sunflower seeds, night scented stock and Mily Way (to temporarily cover a very ugly old wall) Surprisingly in only a week three trays of cabbage seeds have sprouted.
A cherry tree I ordered from Thompson and Morgan arrived and I planted that in a container on the patio.
The herbs have all sprouted well and I'm hoping to get them in the herb garden in a couple of weeks.
Back to the grind at work tomorrow but I feel good as had such a productive time.

Just got mine so today as the kids were at grandmas was my first proper day of digging...four hours later and blisters to prove it( my soft hands are very unused to work)......have got in some onions, garlic, beetroot, spinach and turnips....hoping to get some spuds in tommorrow

my earth on the plot is so dry it's like rock! i'm finding it extremely hard going i had wanted to put my spuds in there but i think it might be abit late by the time i've sorted this out. it's like bricks and when you can crumble it it's like dust, what can i do??? it's horrid :S
on th eother hand, my greenhouse is loving this dry spell! my sweetcorn and cucumbers are sprouting:)

Didn't get much done this weekend due to working

BUT got 11 days off - bank hols etc so can't wait to get cracking, tomatoes and cucumbers doing well and need planting in position in the polytunnels, more peas to sow and lettuce, caulis cabbage to transplant, busy busy busy!!!

Might just have time to get one day of relaxation in over the holiday!!!

What are we doing on the allotment, last night enjoying the warm weather, having supper of asparagus and eggs cooked on the allotment.

going to soak it and dig in some compost and leave it till ealry next week - hopefully will be able to put me spuds in then :)

Pops, personally I wouldn't dig in the compost, I'd leave it on top where it will act as a mulch, retaining moisture, and just let the worms tdo the work, they will take it down into the soil gradually.
