Since the water is for irrigation and not drinking, could you throw a goldfish or similar into it? It'd probably eat the skeeter larvae.

Sorry to get anal here (why stop now everyone shouts), technically those containers with the metal frame etc are called Schutz containers and are a form of IBC as Nev says.

So if you want to search just for them type in schutz.

Schutz are the company that makes them, and once you've used the contents are the people who then pick them back up to wash and reuse, even though you bought the product contained from Joe Bloggs. It's a great recycling thing, a bit like the old bottle deposit, but bigger

Because of this , I'm supprised they are for sale, also it make me think if they don't want them back...what was in it in the first place?.

Edit. Also I've found that the water off the roof soon fills my butt up (Oh Er Missus), and then it gets diverted back down the drain. You can like I did cobble together (with many leaks, swearing etc)a joining pipe to link into a second barrel from the bottom of the first to the bottom of the second, so they fill and empty together. Or as I found out at the weekend you can buy the kit from B&Q for about £4!

So where are Schutz based as these containers seem to exist all over Europe and Australia!

I wonder how much money they'd pay to have them back? Bet not as much as I paid for them! We bought one from a DIY shop and the other from some Jacques Blogges that my neighbour's son knows.

Good question, about cost, think about the volume of plastic, the metal the tap etc. Those things are made to last, which is why we're all lusting over them for the garden/house!.

They are not cheap. If I was to say that you can buy a 750 L water tank in plastic for around £300, and the schutz are are at least 1000L , then encased in metal so you can stack them on top of each other, and are made to transported around the world, that'll give you some idea.

They usually appear for sale (and I,m not saying this is always true) when they have been nicked. A bit like pallets. There is a whole underworld economy based on nicked pallets. My company makes around 60,000Tonnes of material shipped out on pallets, each worth around £5 to make ( £3 million), and we do our utmost to get the buggers back to re use.! And yet you will see everywhere dodgy painted signs with " pallets wanted" all over the place.

But they are very cheap in France - see my previous posting - so maybe I could be onto a winner here buy 'em up cheap in France and sell 'em on expensive (but still cheaper) in the water shortage areas of the UK!
