101 uses for a playground

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

I remember the tennis ball in the stocking thing. Great fun!

Anyone do leapfrogs? We used to go around the perimeter of the playground all lunchtime jumping over each others backs. Couldn't do that now without pulling something!
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!

we used to play tim tam tommy which had a home and was like hide and seek.If 'IT' saw you, they shouted tim tam tommy 1 2 3 I see .... behind the wall and .... had to come and be in prison. If someone managed to get to the prison without being seen ,they shouted tim tam tommy 1 2 3 all released and everyone was free again.Cant remember if IT had to catch you first or just see you and wether the prisoners joined in the hunt or not...I lived in council flats,so we played a lot of this sort of game.
Follow my leader.
colours which sounds like rin tin tin (I think we made up the name colours).
rounders with a bit of old stick or your hand as the bat.
Some games had punishments if you were the loser which involved going through a tunnel of linked arms and having the weather land on you.Thumping was thunder, blowing was wind, digging fingers - rain and chopping hands-lightening.
Red rover
Dare
Kingy which was 'had' using a sock ball.IT had to hit you below the knee to catch you and you had to join the hunt so the ball got passed around.

My mums generation were more evil...They played cake walk where you would blindfold someone whilst everyone sat in a line facing each other with their legs in front of them. The victim had to try and walk down the line of legs without falling or treading on anyone while people shouted advice. She said everyone removed their legs and just watched the poor victim cavorting about. I suppose it was a one off game for when somebody new joined the group. They also played dentists which involves a pot of mustard (so not really for school).Somebody would be the dentist and each child lined up and saw the dentist, emerging with their hand over their mouth and eyes full of tears.

Remember a lot of those games, we once played the Hokey Kokey sp We being the whole of the junior school, must have been about 100 of us. Only played it the once, the neighbours complained and we where banned from playing it again

Another game we played at senior school, which was also banned 8) was knives. 2 people faced each other, and 1 had a penknife and threw to the ground to the side of the person opposite them. That person then had to move their foot next to the knife and take it out of the ground. They then threw it at the other person again to the side of them. We'd carry on untill some one fell over tring to pick up the knife or untill a teacher was spotted.
