If you are still worried about kidney beans, then you can cook them in the slow cooker and then boil the stew rapidly on the hob - I believe it is only 10 mins that they need, or you could boil them on their own before they went into the pot, whatever makes you trust it.

about toxins in other foods, some I knew, but others I had no idea.
Opinionated but harmless

Just had a look & had no idea about parsnips or courgettes! Also 'toxic honey'!!! Eeeep! Although it seems to just be a problem in certain areas of NZ. Interesting link though, thanks

A first aid treatment for oxalic acid intake (rhubarb leaves) is to feed the victim copious amounts of milk or better still, ground chalk. the calcium mixes with the oxalic acid to make a harmless white sedement which will eventually be pooped out.
Had to use it on my little brother when he was 3 and he suffered no ill effects. we're still not sure how much of the rhubarb leaf he ate though!!

also, nutmeg is toxic in large quantities. even small amounts give me headaches but I love the stuff.
Pineapple (even small amounts) is known to increase the potency of some anti depressants, sometimes to dangerous levels if you're already on a fairly high dose; but it's rarely listed on the box as sometihng to avoid!

Sear your meat and bung it in the pot with some liquid. Pot roast is wonderful - just sear your brisket and bung it in the pot with roughly chopped onion and chunky carrots and some liquid and let it go til the meat falls apart! I tend to use water and add a stock cube later it needed
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Malcolm X used to 'swipe' a match box full of nutmeg from the prison kitchen to get high on... if you can get it down your neck cancel all engagements for at least 2 days. Contains base ingredient of MDA / MDMA (raw ingredient for Ecstasy), called safrole if I remember correctly, which is carcinogenic, can lead to renal failure and is one of the things that makes people go blind when drinking wood alcohol (as they did in the prohibition era), and is also a danger if you try to make potato wine.

(I remember rightly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safrole)

well toxic honey hit the news this summer when a batch made it into the supermarkets, so it is definitely a problem here. Poisoning from it can be fatal. Fortunately it is a rare occurance
