I sow mine in stations and usually get really good germination, albeit a bit slow. I make holes about an inch deep and 9 inches apart in rows, pour boiling water from the kettle into each on and let it drain before putting a couple of seeds into each hole and covering with soil. Last year I put in catch crops of lettuce in between which worked really well but this year I've got a few more chickens and they have discovered the joy of al fresco greens
so I couldn't do that again. The boiling water trick really seems to help with germination. They have been very slow this year but all the rows are coming through finally.

Parsnips are weird this year, don't give up if they didn't germinate.
I sowed 4 rows of parsnips on the 27th of March with fresh seed. About a dozen came up and are doing nicely now, but 2 rows did nothing.
I decided to hoe off the weed today in the 2 empty rows and guess what ?
Lots of freshly germinated parsnip seedlings !
10 weeks is a long time to germinate in late spring.
