As far as I know toads lay their eggs in water, and their spawn is a long string shape unlike frog spawn which is laid in a clump.
I have no idea what the 'eggs' are but I hope you will keep us informed when they turn (mutate) into something else!

I certainly will.
Thanks to everyone who's had a look at these, particularly MKG for putting my mind (slightly) at rest that I'm not going to get over-run by a few million slugs or snails!
Hopefully whatever it is won't be partial to spuds or onions...

I have narrowed it down to just 3 possibilities.
It's either animal, vegetable or mineral.

I've been looking into slime moulds and jelly fungi a bit more deeply. It may be that the identification of your mystery "stuff" is because surprisingly little is known about the immature stages of those things. Save those photos - you may be onto a scientific breakthrough!

Anyway, here's some pictures. To give you an idea of the size of these things, the dead stems you can see are grass stems:
If these embedded images don't work, here's a link (and can you please tell me if they don't work - not sure if it's possible to directly link to picassa):

So... any ideas?
chances are picasa has an anti leech setting so that the images on their server can't be viewed on other websites, only a guess.

Not last time I looked - I'll have another check tonight and let you know.
Is the forum meant to be this pink now, or is it just me?

Hmmm - top and bottom are a deal greener, but pink I don't see.

There's a current thread about forum changes somewhere - can't remember what it's called, sorry. Nobody has complained of any pink though!!!

It was like a tiled pink pattern as the background, and the posts were coming in striped - alternately green and pink. Not the most beautiful sight. Must have been a glitch on my browser.
Anyway, the 'eggs' still look exactly the same, which makes me think even more that they can't be insect eggs - correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming insect eggs would tend to have a fairly short gestation period?

Yep - they would certainly have changed form, so eggs are off the menu.

If anyone is particularly interested in my mysterious substance, PM me your address and I'll pop some in the post to you - I'd happily pay the cost of a stamp for another opinion!
