24 ? I find raw ginger dispenses with the sore throat symptoms pretty quickly as well as clearing the sinuses.

At the first sign, garlic. Ideally raw .... in general, garlic which you mince, then wait 5 minutes, then put it in some food which you don't cook too long. If you're allergic to garlic (my husband is, gives him a headache etc) use onion, but keep that 10 mins after cutting before you cook it. See http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=george&dbid=54.
For babies: put some sliced onion rings behind their little ears ....
Ginger is also good.
