You can try rescuing cardboard from public recycling bins and the places that have seriously big sheets of the stuff, like white goods stores.
I used big sheets of thin cardboard (wrenched from the bemused hands of a woman feeding it into a recycling bin) to plant the leeks through last year but it had all gone, eaten by woodlice etc., by spring.
