Hey tea690,

My heart goes out to your wee boy.

My daughter occasionally suffers from contispation and it can be very distressing. We have found Weetabix has been helpful for getting things moving and like the last post I have found peeling apples a good one. I have even grated the apples!

One other way to get pure fruit juices into my kids was to freeze them as ice lollies. I don't know if you have tried that, and I suppose it is a bit cold at the moment but hope it helps.

To be honest, I did try mixing bananas in with stuff like weetabix / museli / mashed on wholemeal toast, (cos he does luv a nanar!) but it was only removing them completely from Ellis's diet for a few days that we got him moving, as it were!

(I replaced the banana with chopped dates, sultanas or chopped up dried apricots so he didn't find his breakfast too bland without the fruit, these of course have a laxative effect in themselves.)

Once he started going regularly again, with no pain, we reintroduced them but now limit them to 1 or 2 a week..stopping them again if he seems to be getting a blockage.

I find the same with eggs - I know lots of mums feed their children an egg every day, but Ellis would explode if he had more than 2 a week!! Which is a shame, as the eggs would be a valuable bit of protein in a predominantly vegetarian diet. (Fortunately he loves lentils and other pulses, so I'm not too worried but eggs are much easier to rustle up for a starving, screaming toddler!).

Obviously all kidlings are different, so it might be that bananas don't bung up your littlies as badly as mine gets bunged up by them; but it's certainly worth a try just to see if it makes a difference!!

By quick bread I mean the kind without yeast like banana bran bread, blueberry muffins, raisin walnut bread, apple bread, or cranberry walnut bread. You stir the wet ingredients and the dry ingredients together without over mixing and bake it just after combining.

When I was wee and bunged up my mum would put a small liver of soap up my bum - yes it does sound aweful, but apparently the soap softens the stool and stimulates pushing and really it's just the same as a suppository. A friend of mine also gave her wee one brown sugar in warm water to drink and that seemed to work well and of course littly loved it! Gooed luck - hope he's better soon.

Sorry if any or all of these have been ruled out already.
Kiwifruit
Black licorice
Apples (the skin is the important part)
Whole grains (loads of kids cereals are yummy and packed with fibre and whole grains.
Some white breads are fibre enriched for those who don't like brown bread.
Metamucil/fibersure/etc dissolved in foods and drinks your child enjoys
Just because I can't do everything I won't fail to do something.

What about flapjacks full of dried fruit? I made some yesterday and they were, erm, very successful on the nappy front!

4 oz melted butter
Added 5oz porridge oats
2oz unrefined brown sugar (recipe says 4oz but that's FAR too sweet IMO!)
1 tablespoon of golden syrup
Added a peeled apple cut into wee cubes, around 6 sweet dates (like the 'Eat Me' onces, destoned and chopped, a handful of sultanas and some chopped dried apricot.

Just melt the butter in a pan, chuck in everything else, stir to coat everything and then pop onto a greased baking tray at 160 degrees / Gas Mark 3 for about half an hour. Leave to cool slightly, then score with a knife to make about 12 small flapjacks.

I'd be cautious of removing entire food groups, reduce, by all means, but, unless he has a diagnosed intollerance or allergy I wouldn't remove all together - It is just my opinion, I don't mean to preach.

Well done on the kiwi fruit... yummy

Glad to here he is doing better

Just got to the bottom of this topic ( no pun intended) I will suggest apple juice, when my daughter was small and became blocked up 3- 4 days worth, I would give her some apple juice and within 2-3 hours problem solved shall we say - could be worth a try
I'm glad to read he is getting better sounds like a really nasty time

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and currently mum to two with number three due any day.

Hopefully you're all sorted with your little boy's constipation problems but just in case you're still having problems, we had the same with our eldest so I thought I'd reply to your thread.

Ours ended up on Movicol and the other thing that helped was glycerin suppositories - it's not much fun for you or them putting them in but they certainly help. He's six now and doesn't suffer much these days but I still have some Movicol and suppositories around in case.

In general though I use the orange juice and citrus fruits approach while cutting down on bananas. I never found high fibre particularly good for myself and he doesn't seem to either.

Anyway, hope your little boy is still doing well.
