I fried it in butter with garlic and it was lovely and I lived!

I really wish I could find a puff ball, anyonoe got any suggestions of how to find them? I thought about looking for white dots on google earth?!?

Does anyone keep cows down your way helsbells? We find them in our neighbours field where she keeps young heffers. Our neighbour is more than happy to let us pick them - until we came she would kick them away - what a waste! She thinks were a bit touched to eat them.

I agree, they are delish just sauted in butter and garlic. We've also made soups and fritttata and usually mix in a few dried ceps for flavour.

Hmm I will have to keemy eyes open for cows then, I live in the largest housing estate in England, so I mught have to travel a bit to find them!!

Puffballs tend to grow on short grass (heathland) or pasture land and if you live in the towns or cities try your local golf course, the best time to forage for them is from late july onwards. there are woodland species but don't grow as big.
