Its one of the 'new' basic tastes - Umami. Its disgusting as a basic taste, its a salty flavour that curls up around your tonsils and starts moving behind your nose.
In sweet and sour sauce, however....yumm...
You used to drink MSG in water? Or am I being thick?
Yes.
I was an alcoholic drink taster a few years ago. Its a fantastic job until they start going on about basic tastes and make you drink sugar water, salt water, caffeine in water and MSG in water. Yeuch!

Jane and i have given up on take aways as the food colourings give her a migraine and me they just seem to bypass my stomach
so we tend to treat ourselves by cooking our own "stop in anyways" and open a few bottles of home made wine
all the best

Just by chance, I saw a take away in Aberdeen the other night that had a big sign in the window: no MSG, no sugar (and there were a few other "nos", but I can't remember them). I think it was Chinese, or some kind of Asian, anyway. If I still lived in Aberdeen, I might even try them out!

I have had bouts of chronic urticaria, and MSG really flairs it up. My lips swell at times and I need to take prednisone. Awful!
